When I first started reading the first chapter I questioned why I needed to know the “story” being told. As I continued to read I realized that it was a background to what I was going to be learning; it also gave me something to connect the new information to. The next section of the chapter I found very interesting. I learned new information about the brain; for example, a brain has “one quadrillion connections that guides how we talk, eat, breathe, and move” (Pink, 2006, p.13). I knew that the brain had connections but I never knew how many and I never suspected it to be that large of a number. Pink said that “there are two kinds of people in the world, an old joke goes: those who believe that everything can be divided into two categories- and the rest of you” (Pink, 2006, p. 25). This really made me think; it made me think of which one I am. After reading this it made me consider this for many things other than just the brain. In this chapter I learned that this day in age is very different from the past, which I knew but I did not realize how this changed the brain. Pink had a good point written “for business, it’s no longer enough to create a product that’s reasonably priced and adequately functional. It must also be beautiful, unique, and meaningful”(Pink, 2006, p. 33). Reading this made me think of how true it is. In the past people bought things based on the need and practicality but now it is also about how it looks. Another thing that I took away from this is how automation is changing; it is even “changing the work of many doctors” (Pink, 2006, p. 45). One of the last things that I took from this is that in today’s world more people are looking for their “meaning” in life. It is less of daily and more of what the future holds. Overall, I really enjoyed this reading. I feel like I learned quite a bit from this. It made me more aware of what the brain is and what it can do. I also learned that the brain is just more than it seems, it is so complex. While reading I thought of how times today are so much more different from how it used to be. Finally, I realized why and how it is different and how it is changing our minds.
