CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1  Background of the Study

These days, English has became the most globally used
language by people all around the world to speak to each other. It becomes the
second language for most countries. In order to do a good communication with
English, student these days are told to use English since they were a children.
Their parents taught them this since the very young age.

Listening is one of the four skills that are thought in
English teaching nowadays, it’s a very important skills for students to master.
According to Vandergrift & Goh (2012) in Abbas Ali Zarei journal 2017
stated that Listening is one of the most vital language skills. It enables
language learners to receive input and facilitates the emergence of other
language skills. Based on this statement, the researcher conclude that in order
to understand other language skills, students need to master Listening skill
first. Most people are focusing on their Speaking ability without taking
attention to their Listening comperhension, even though the development of
Listening is way faster than speaking. Without any will to improve their
Listening, their skill won’t be improving significantly.

These days, Technology is taking over most field in our
life. Even in the studying field. It can be implemented in classroom for
educational purpose with media, such as video. Based on title book by Jeremy
Harmer in p.308, unspoken habit of human is easier to be seen while watching
video based rather than reading a book or listening to an audio. Resulting in
better performance in listening comprehension for most students these days.

Based on the explanation above, according the researcher
experience, he realized that using video in teaching English is very important,
especially for listening. Students performance in listening can be highly
improved if the material is including something that they are interested about,
in this case, an interactive video made by PACI Model. So, in this research,
the researcher wants to find out the correlation between using PACI Model and
Students Listening Comprehension in eleventh grade of SMK Negeri 7 Samarinda.
Researcher choose this because the school is familiar with using technology in
their daily teaching-learning.

1.2  Research Questions

      According to researcher
explanation above, he would like to answer a few question :

a.     Is
there any significant correlation between using PACI Model and  SMK Negeri 7 Students Academic Year 2017/2018
listening’s comprehension.

1.3  Research Objectives

According to researcher explanation above, he would like to
answer a few question :

a.     To
find out if there is any significant correlation of Listening Comperhension of
second grade students in SMK Negeri 7 Samarinda before and after being taught
by PACI model

1.4   Hypothesis

1.      The
Null Hypotesis (Ho)

“There is no significant correlation of
using PACI model in improving students listening comprehension”

2.      The
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha)

“There is a significant correlation of
using PACI model in improving students listening comprehension”

1.5  Definition of Key terms

      To
clearess description about the terms, the writer explains some definitions of
key terms as follows :

1.
Correlation                            :
Correlation is a quantity measuring the extent of the interdependence of
variable quantities. This study concern on relationship between using PACI
Model and Student’s Listening comperhension at SMK Negeri 7 Samarinda.

2.
PACI
Model                           :
PACI (Powerpoint, Audacity, Camtasia, Internet) is a final product in video
form that is make by those program.

3.
Listening                                : Listening
is an activity in which someone hear something with full attention. In English
stude, it is a vital skills required for interpersonal communication, without
any listening. People  will be having a
hard time understanding what people are saying.

4.
Comprehension                     : is the ability for someone to understand something

5.
Listening
comprehension     :
Is an activity in which someone listen something with full attention and
whether they understand it or not.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATED LITERATURE

2.1  Theories and Concept

2.1.1
Concept
of Correlation

                        While learning about statistics,
there are a lot of concept of correlation. According to Gay (1992, p.269)
stated that relationship studies aer conducted in an attempt to gain insight
into the factors of variables that are related to complex variables such as
academic achievement, motivation and self-concept.

In research, correlational is when finding the
relationship between at least two variables without trying to change or
influence them. It is referred as a descriptive research because the variable
is already exists. ( How to Design and Evaluate in Research Design, 7th ed. by
Jack. R Fraenkel & Norman E. Wallen p.331)

With that, the reseacher conclude that correlational
research is going to help him finding out if there is a connection between
using PACI Model and Students Listening Comprehension.

2.1.2
Concept
of PACI Model

Today’s teaching field creates a lot
of new combination of combining software into a teaching media. PACI
(Powerpoint, Audacity, Camtasia and Internet). It can help the teacher
integrates all of their knowledge into a video product. This requires a skill
in technological area, but it is highly efficient and effective. (Designing and
Developing Supplemental Technology of PACI Model Materials through Blended
Learning Methods, Effendi Limbong, p.272)

It can be concluded that using video for teaching media
is going to make up a lot of time for the teacher to speak in front of the
class. It is much more efficient and effective than traditional teaching
method.

2.1.3
Concept
of Listening

A lot of research has shown that Listening is more than
just extracting what the speaker means. It is also a process of “matching” of
what the listeners already know. Resulting if listeners know the context from
an utterance, it is automatically making appropriate message to understand the
message (Brynes, 1984)

            So,
listening is a vital skills to have when we are going to learn a English.

2.2  Relevant Previous Studies

Developing Supplemental Technology of PACI Model Materials through Blended
Learning Methods”

A Study from Abdullah
Sarani, titled “The Effect of Video-Based Tasks in Listening Comprehension of

Reading Comperhension”

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

            In this chapter, the researcher
presented research design, population and sample, instrument, data collection
techniques, and data analysis technique.

1.1  Research Design

      The
reseacher used simple correlational design in quantitative approach. Simple
correlation is happening because of the relationship between two variables. In
this case, the researcher first variable is the score of students before being
taught by PACI Model, and the second variable is the score of the students
after being taught by PACI Model.

      The
Instruments used by the researcher to get the data needed are PACI Model and an
exercise paper with 25 questions. The researcher took a population in group of
students that are examined is the Eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 7
Samarinda. Then, the score of listening before and after taught by PACI Model
are compared. To find out, the correlation between two variables, the
researcher is using Pearson Product Moment Formula.

1.2  Population and Sample

      The
population of this study is the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 7
Samarinda in 2017/2018 academic year consisting 6 classes. To get the data, the
researcher only took 60 students in 2 Multimedia classes. The reseacher used
non-random sampling for this research.

      The type of
sampling techniques that the researcher used is Purposive sampling, The
researcher took the highest achieving class among the population. There are 6
classes in eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 7 Samarinda, so apart from all
of those classes, the writer took 2 classes to become a sample. With Class A
(30 Students) and Class B (30 Students) which is both the highest achieving
classes among the population.

1.3  Instrument

The research instrument used by reseacher is a video made by
PACI Model, and exercise paper with 25 questions. Video made by PACI Model is
used for giving materials to students, while the exercise paper is to find out
the score before and after the students taught by PACI Model.

1.4  Data Collection Technique

      There are two data that
is used to make this research, they are, Students Listening achievement before
being taught by PACI Model, and Students Listening achievement after being
taught by PACI Model.

Those data are collected based on :

1.   The
reseacher given the exercise to the students before they were taught by            PACI Model.

2.   Students
then collect the paper to the teacher.

3.   The
researcher score the results.

4.   The
researcher then giving students PACI Model style learning for a few   meeting.

5.   The
researcher then once again give the students a exercise to see if there is an       improvement with their listening skills.

6.   Correlating
both scores
