In the book, Of Mice and Men by: John Steinbeck, George and Lennie have a very strong friendship, but each of them do experience difficult times, but they are both there for each other in spite of it. They have positives and negatives in their friendship. Steinbeck shows how important it is to have at least one good friendship and to stick with it. John portrays George and Lennie to have one of the greatest friendships although, it seems as if George swears that he doesn’t really need Lennie by his side, he really does need him though because that’s what keeps him going. There are many positive aspects of George and Lennie’s friendship. In the book, it talks about how they both are always there for each other throughout anything they go through. George helps Lennie out in some ways and vice versa. For example, when slim is talking to george he says, “You guys travel around together?.Sure, we kinda look after each other.”(34). Basically, that shows how george and lennie are constantly looking after each other because they really care about each other. George tries to take charge when helping lennie out because he knows very well that lennie isn’t the best when he uses his words to explain something. George and Lennie’s friendship keeps growing stronger even when george shoots and kills him, it’s also a sign of caring and the strong friendship. George always wants the best possible life for Lennie so he knew by killing Lennie himself with a gun would be better than letting him be tortured or murdered by someone else. Therefore, there are very many positive aspects of Lennie and George’s friendship. In addition to having positive parts of George and Lennie’s friendship, there are also several negatives. George always seems to get irritated or mad with lennie, when all lennie tries to do is make george happy,it just doesn’t really turn out sometimes. Secondly, another part of the negative side of their friendship is how different their personalities are and the things they do. George blames lennie for the dumb stuff he does and he doesn’t even realize the trouble Lennie goes through because of his handicap. “You gonna give me that mouse or do I have to sock you?”(170). Again, that just shows that George gets really angry at Lennie for doing the smallest things, and it affects their friendship in a negative way. George and Lennie really depend on each other a lot throughout the book, Of Mice and Men. George really depends on lennie because, “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place.” Basically, that suggests that george really does need lennie because without him he would be pretty lonely. I could only imagine how difficult it was for george to shoot his best friend. The only reason he did it was to save lennie from having getting murdered by curley. George and Lennie have had several things that have had a negative impact on their close relationship. Finally, the book, Of Mice and Men, has a few things that make George and Lennie’s friendship negative, and some other things that make it more of a positive relationship between the two. Lennie and George had each others back throughout the whole book and seemed to stay by each others side even when things got hard. The two friends always backed each other up when they needed help and they were always there for each other no matter what. Of mice and men showed me that their friendship had both a positive and negative impact.
